The Chains We Place Around Ourselves

Everyone is a monster, our faces hidden by rules and laws,
We strive to destroy each other, and not with just force and claws.
Manipulation, destruction, betrayal, and pain,
Forces fueled by greed and the selfish desire to gain.

Our demons can sacrifice mountains to a fury of ash and flame,
But with all the world’s hate on their backs, are they really the ones to blame?

A beast only evolves to thrive,
All they can do is try to survive,
And if an environment is what shapes someone,
It is our cruel world that forces us to run.

One can fight, or one can run,
Become a monster or else be shunned.
And this we do, blissfully unaware,
We cheat, we lie, we call it “fair.”

Yet though we complain about our problematic life
We are still blind to the cause of our strife.

We chain ourselves down,
And only those who hold the keys of truth
Can break free from the common ground
It is they who know what we fight from inside
For in the end we have no place to hide.
